The Extreme and Normal Offshore Wind (ENOW) Joint Industry Project (JIP) was initiated in 2017 to meet common requirements of major offshore wind developers. The collaborative research continues to grow with the energy transition, as illustrated below. The following benefits have been delivered so far:

  • The majority of available met mast data from the North Sea and Baltic region in digital form
  • Additional LiDAR data from the North Sea and offshore Northeastern United States
  • Reduced uncertainty in vertical profiles of extreme wind speed, turbulence intensity and gust factor
  • Quantified performance of widely used wind models for estimation of normal and extreme winds
  • Objective workflow for extreme offshore wind analysis with recommendations to avoid over-conservatism
